Valentine's Day Countdown

February 7, 2018
  • In my house we countdown for holidays. My kids love to know, “How many days until Valentine’s Day?” Do you hear that question a lot at your house too? For each of the big holidays we have some type of countdown chain or calendar to help us visualize each day passing leading up to the big celebration.

Our Valentine’s Day Countdown begins each year on February 1st. We read a scripture about love for each of the 14 days leading up to Valentine’s Day. Each scripture reference is written on a strip of paper and placed in a Valentine’s countdown pocket along with a small chocolate for each family member. When the kids wake up in the mornings from February 1st through 14th, they rush down the stairs and get their “countdown chocolate” for the day while I read the scripture verse.

This is a simple family tradition we love doing. And I love how easy it is to do. All you need is one small candy for each family member and one scripture for each day leading up to Valentine’s Day. We have your scriptures already made for you right here on a convenient printable. All you need to do is add some chocolate. 🙂

Things that are simple, fun, and get the kids looking forward to the holiday are keys for creating fun holiday memories in our house. Bonus if it also helps bring in the spirit each morning.

Here is a pro tip for us mommas: Last February I made the error of filling all 14 of the Valentine’s Day countdown pockets ahead of time with chocolates. Not sure why I was surprised, but my toddler ate them all that same day! Now I fill them each morning, one day at a time!

I also like to put a small jar next to our countdown calendar. When we see family members showing love to one another, we fill the jar with small hearts in hopes of having the jar overflowing come Valentine’s Day.

Want another way to help teach your preschooler about Jesus’ love this February?

Our letter L Preschool Lesson is titled “Jesus Loves His Little Ones.” Our Scripture Story of the week focuses on Jesus blessing the little children as found in 3 Nephi 17:21. It can be found on the member site for those who have purchased our curriculum.

We would love to hear your favorite Valentine memories! Comment below. Happy Valentine’s Day!
