Preschool Decisions

May 16, 2018
  • Decisions. Sometimes they are so hard to make, especially regarding my children.

I don’t think I am the only one who, at times, suffers from decision overload regarding what to do for my children. When I am trying to make a decision, there are a lot of things I consider such as my child’s personality, what I WANT to do, what I feel I am being guided to do from Heavenly Father, the financial considerations, how my decisions for one child will impact the rest of the family, what is the norm, and long term positive/negative consequences. If I am not careful, decision making for my children can be daunting.

Let’s take deciding on what to do for preschool for example. There are so many options. Should you put your child in preschool at all? Should you do an online computer app? Should they go to a formal preschool, if so which kind and how much time should they be there? Should you do a cooperative preschool (co-op) where you share the responsibility of teaching with some friends? Should you teach them on your own, if so where do you start with that? And then, as you try to gather information of what to do, you get to hear a ton of opinions on why you should FOR SURE do one thing or another. What if a combination of options is best?

I don’t know what is right for you, but here is what I know. Each child and family situation is different. Just because something worked well for one family or even one child within your own family doesn’t mean that the same decision is the right for the particular child you are thinking about. Our Heavenly Father parents and trains each of us individually and we also should parent and train our children as INDIVIDUALS. In a way, this sounds like bad news because there are no easy answers, but luckily we have been given all the tools we need to make these decisions. The pattern of researching options, making a decision, and then praying about what you have decided works even for things like preschool.

What is funny is that I feel like some of these decisions are so heavy! When in truth, if I start down a particular path and find that it isn’t working out, that path can be easily changed. It is not like jumping off a cliff. Most decisions are not life and death when put in the proper perspective. We as parents, and as people, are growing and learning too. It is ok that we don’t have all the answers, I don’t think we are meant to. We grow so much from getting to make decisions.

So, let us keep Heavenly Father in our decision making and let us relax and enjoy the decision making a bit more. Choosing a preschool option is not life and death. We grow as a parent and a person as we make decisions and you will be helped in your decision making as you seek it.
